I liked this movie a lot better than I liked the book, mainly because I hated the book. On the other hand, I’m getting tired of people falling in love with Penélope Cruz without her actually saying anything of interest. Then again, a ton of stuff happens in the film, and they do a decent job of developing the Matt Damon character, so I can’t complain. Watch it for the beautiful landscapes. Worth checking out.

I really liked this movie, but don’t ask me why. Filled with beautiful landscapes and justice being slowly done, somehow it makes life seem simpler. Worth watching.

Oh dear Lord. Is there no better Spanish cinema than this? Honestly I’m not able to say a lot about this one because after 20 minutes I couldn’t stand it anymore and had to skip to the end, only to discover that the end was even worse. The mysterious beauty of Manuela Vellés is wasted again. Unwatchable.

In this thriller, another second-rate Netflix offering, Russell Crowe plays an intellectual who attempts to break his wife out of prison.  The film plods along as he makes his semi-obscure plans, then bursts into action in the third act. Watchable.

The crew of a downed spacecraft fight aliens, yell at one another, and mistrust Vin Diesel.  I can’t blame them — he’s so incredibly smug!  The movie looks and feels like a bad video game.  Barely watchable.

This Ron Howard “comedy” is a curious artifact of a time when American mass culture reflected paranoia about the meteoric rise of the Japanese economy.  The plot follows a zany union rep (?) who convinces a Japanese company to purchase the failing auto factory in his hometown — causing a ludicrously predictable conflict between folksy American workers and stuffy Japanese execs.    Highlights include Michael Keaton punching George Wendt into a giant mound of cheezy poofs, Clint Howard peeing in a bottle, and an assembly line montage that could be lifted from Soviet propaganda. Barely watchable.

Relentlessly depressing, meanwhile this movie asks “Is the Catholic church an organization dedicated to the cause of uniting all uncaring, evil people?” Whatever. Unwatchable.
