A writer is mysteriously transported back to his favorite literary scene, 1920’s Paris.  Some people like the zaniness of Woody Allen’s early stuff (Bananas) while others prefer his more melancholy maturity (Manhattan), but his best work mixes equal parts depression and goofiness (Annie Hall). This film belongs in that last category, with Owen Wilson doing a surprisingly apt Woody impression throughout. Worth watching.

A group of odd ball Brooklyn residents talk, talk some more, then do it all over again. The opening scene of this movie is really promising, but it just goes nowhere from there. The problems that each of the characters have are so cliched that it’s hard to care what happens to them. Still, there are some interesting elements, unfortunately they just don’t add up to much else. Watchable.

Henri deToulouse-Lautrec wanders around the city of Paris in the late 1800s, troubled by love, drink and a lack of artistic inspiration. This movie could be good if it weren’t so damn boring. Zsa Zsa Gabor is particularly obnoxious. Barely watchable.

I did not enjoy this film. Don’t watch it if you are more likely to be annoyed than you are to enjoy a film that is ultra artsy. If you watched Kieslowski’s Ten Commandments series, you should know what to expect. Barely watchable (for normal people).

I can’t remember anyone ever mentioning to me how this is an excellent movie, so I conclude that it flew under the radar somehow. Steve Carell is very funny in a role reminiscent of his character in 40-year-old virgin. Worth watching.

Very intriguing setup that delivers as well or better than you could have expected. Lots of intense violence makes it hard to watch, but overall quite good. Similar to Sin City, if that movie weren’t terrible. Worth checking out.

What? I thought this movie was supposed to be about racism. This movie is not about racism. This is a sci-fi/action movie, and contains much less social commentary than Gattaca. About the same amount as Total Recall. In any case, much of this movie is overly gruesome and hard to watch, but the plot stays interesting and the combat scenes are very cool. Worth checking out.
