The life stories of four American-born women and their Chinese-born mothers intertwine to reveal common themes pervading the immigrant experience, the female experience, and the human experience. The movie is well-made, but basically the director has chosen to get out of the way in order to let the actors and the story do the work.  A wise decision in a movie that derives its strength from its honest and emotional portrayals of relationships between people. On one recent occasion, some of the reviewers on this site literally required other people to view this movie. Required Viewing plus.

The first film ever to achieve such high acclaim. A triumph!
