If you consider that director Xavier Dolan made this film at age 21, you’ll probably be pretty impressed. But if you don’t consider that, then there’s not a lot left to like about this Canadian film that tells the story of two friends, one woman who is obsessed with vintage clothing and Audrey Hepburn in the worst possible way, and one man whose only defining characteristic is that he’s gay, and their mutual object of affection, an androgynous young man who’s just moved into town. This could have been a movie about love, it could have been about what it means to be gay and in love, it could have been about what it means to be straight and in love, it could have been about what it means to be friends and in love, but instead it’s just boring, contrived and pretentious. But remember! Xavier Dolan was only 21 when he made this, so while the film might not have been a success in its own right, it does have me excited to see where his career takes him. Barely watchable.
