Pinhole Movie Reviews

Movies to watch – Thomas

A list of my “favorite” movies would really just be a list of big budget mainstream science fiction movies — and their often amazing sequels — that came out in the 1980’s and early 90’s. Blade RunnerGhostbustersShort Circuit, Alien and Aliens, Back to the Future and Back to the Future II, Star Trek II and IV, and of course The Terminator and Terminator 2.  Netflix algorithm, if you’re listening to me, more power to you.

Many other movies appeal to me, like Rushmore, the films of Jaques Tati, old Woody Allen stuff, Repo ManChinatown, even Four Weddings and a Funeral. Let me put it this way: I love An Inconvenient Truth but I also liked that Mitt Romney documentary — because they were both good movies.

If you’re looking for movies to watch, my advice is to watch stuff that you think you’ll like.

If you do decide to watch some classics, and don’t like the American Film Institute all that much, the Criterion folks recently published a list of 141 movies that the late Roger Ebert particularly liked. I’ve seen a bunch of them but I have a long way to go!

If you are a crazy person, check out The New York Times list of 1,000 greatest movies (from 10 years ago).  It turns out Star Trek II is on the list, so you can relax.

Also, to paraphrase Nick Hornby, the trouble with influential movies is that if you have absorbed the influence without watching the original, it can sometimes be hard to appreciate the magnitude of its achievement.  So keep that in mind when you watch Citizen Kane!
