With a script by the writer of Die Hard — plus considerable star power, including the legendary Raul Julia — this movie had promise.  Which is why Street Fighter: The Movie – What Went Wrong” is such a fascinating piece; it details the disastrous production process that gave us this train wreck of a movie. (Does anyone remember the movie adaptation of Mortal Kombat? It is Criterion compared to this.)  I loved reading the article and watching this horrible film — it’s a lot like listening to Jack Hitt’s opening story from the “Fiasco!” episode of This American Life. Unwatchable.

JCVD is a boxer who messes with the wrong gangster, his only hope of escape is becoming a legionnaire. When I think of films about desert warfare, I think of large scale battles and horses sweeping across barren landscapes, I think of Lawrence of Arabia. This movie movie is certainly no Lawrence of Arabia, it has neither the scale nor the complexity of character, it doesn’t even really give JCVD a chance to show off his muscles. Watchable.

Everybody’s “going rogue” in this wacky sci-fi action movie. Since I had no idea going in what this movie was about, the first five minutes were strange. After that it was a fine movie, but nothing special. Watchable.

The good guys kill the bad guy’s kid, so they have to kill the bad guy before he starts killing other people’s kids. There is a shoot out scene in the first half of the movie that takes place in a nursery. JCVD and M. Rourke exchange bullets, rolling trays with newborn babies and some tense words. If you like dead kids, you’re gonna love this movie! Unwatchable.

Street Fighter. This movie is ridiculous on every level. There’s really no reason a grown adult needs to watch this movie. Still, it’s not offensively bad and it’s clear that the actors all had fun hamming up every scene the best they could. Barely watchable.
